8TH MAY 2011
Dorset, Lyme Bay, ~22nm South of West Bay
3 Common Dolphin encountered at 05:30am. We were on a 43' yacht sailing from Dartmouth to Isle of Wight crossing Lyme Bay, when a single Common Dolphin started leaping out of water and spinning back slapping water, close to the boat, two other Common Dolphins joined it and swam alongside, in front of and under our yacht, eventually after 5 minutes one left and remaining two stayed with boat for at least 3 or 4 minutes. Weather was cloudy, Force 4 winds, sea was choppy, 1-2m swell. I got a real feeling the dolphins were watching me as I leant over the side, fascinating creatures. Sighting reported by Don Munro.
